Sprints, distance, throws, hurdles, jumps, and pole vaulting are seven words that describe one sport. As spring season rolls around once more, so do spring season sports. One sport that stands out particularly amongst the others is track.
With no fewer than 100 students on the track team, they must be versatile and agile because they do not just run around a track for time. Each student competes in two to four different events each meet.
Each event is unique in its own way. Sprinters are basically “speed” people. They race against the clock to finish first against their opponents. Distance runners are slightly different. Rather than just speed, they focus on how long they can run while also coming in with a good time. Throws, hurdles, jumps, and pole vaulting are the complement to all the running that goes on in track. Throws are when the player is tested on how far they can throw a weight such as a discus or shot. Hurdles and jumps are very similar. The difference is that in hurdles they jump over several obstacles while in jumps measure how far or high one can jump. Lastly, one of the most commonly known events in track is pole vaulting. Pole vaulting is when the competitor runs with a pole in hand, charging toward a mattress with a horizontal bar that must be cleared.
Although the season has not yet begun, the track team is currently training during sixth period and after school. In addition, both before and during the season they compete in special meets called invitationals. A select number of athletes from schools are chosen to compete in meets that take place on either a Friday or weekend at various locations.
